WEBINAR - Understanding and supporting research into tics and TS

    Venue: Online via zoom

We all know how important research is to the advancement of understanding and treatments for tics, so we are delighted to bring you this bespoke session to talk about research into tics and TS.

Hosted by PhD students Marta Topor from the University of Surrey, and Hannah Slack from the University of Nottingham, this informal presentation will shed light on various topics including:

Why is research into Tics and TS important?
Research Ethics - What happens before researchers can invite you to participate in their studies?
What are the different types of research studies available?
    How can you get involved?

You will hear about their current research projects and have a chance to ask questions at the end.

We welcome adults, parents and children to take part and anyone who has an interest in getting involved.

Befriender training and introduction to volunteering on the helpdesk

    Venue: Online via zoom

Not everyone is able to access a local support group and some people prefer to communicate with others on a one-to-one basis. This is where our volunteer befrienders can help.

Many families and adults have told us that they would like to be able to email or telephone another family , adult, teenager or child to talk candidly about their experiences with someone who understands, who has been through similar experiences.

The main role of the befriender (you, the volunteer) is to offer informal support and a listening ear by forming a trusting and supportive relationship by email/or telephone with the service user. If successful, the relationship will help to reduce isolation and provide information, understanding and mutual friendship.

Many people may feel lost, socially isolated and stressed following a diagnosis of TS or whilst navigating the health system to seek a diagnosis. They may be distressed about living with Tourettes or managing it within a school or work environment. Our volunteer befrienders can play a part in helping reduce all of these feelings and to help the person or family to move forward.

The role is home based and hours are to suit.

There will also be a short introduction to volunteering on our helpdesk.

The training will take no more than 1.5 hours.
