My Behind the Scenes Tour of LHR
by George Millward age 13
We started the day by meeting everyone and they were all very nice. We then had a safety talk with Andy. We put our safety gear on and got on a bus to the terminal where we went through security. Next stop was the bagging area. We saw how the baggage went to different planes on what looked like a mini rollercoaster. I found this part the most interesting because it works very similarly to rollercoasters using magnetics to power it.

Next, we went on top of a roof to see views of planes taking off/ landing and learnt lots of facts. I learnt that you need a specific license to drive around an airport.
Then we went on a bus to the air traffic control tower. We went up in a lift to the top where there were cool views of London and Thorpe Park as well as the airport.
Next was the Fire station, where we met the fire fighters who took us to have a look around a fire engine. They told us that the fire engines at Heathrow airport cost an average of a million pounds each and weigh 17 tons. We then got to spray the water cannons and had a ride in the fire engine to a water filling station where we were shown how to fill the cannons.

After this we saw a concord plane. It used to travel twice the speed of sound. It was very aerodynamic. It was cool to see one because they are so rare.
Next, we went back and had some food and a chat. We chatted about how they can make the airport a much better experience for people with Tourette’s. I thought it would be great if everyone had training to know more about Tourette syndrome.
I thought the day was very fun and interesting and I liked meeting new people with Tourette’s. I felt more relaxed because I felt like I was allowed to tic without worrying as I was with people who had Tourette’s and people who knew about Tourette’s.
One word to sum up my day is INTERESTING!
I have always wanted to work as a roller coaster designer so learning more about engineering from Andy and seeing the baggage area was cool!
Thank you to everyone who gave us the tour!
