Josef Bates is a young, passionate filmmaker who was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome as a teenager. His latest project is a short film/pilot 'Tic' which he hopes will be one of the most insightful portrayal of Tourettes in fiction film to date.

Josef aspires to combat the common stigmas relating to the disorder, and find a new way to help people understand what it can be like to live with Tourettes - entertainment is the best form of education!

In recent years Josef has developed a black comedy style within his work, his latest short film 'Meat' is currently in the UK & European film festival circuit - he hopes to incorporate the same fun style of storytelling into 'Tic'.

The comedy value and humour in 'Tic' is nothing like the conventional portrayal which is often used in film and television.  The main character has a particularly aggressive tic in his left arm which causes some physically challenging, but lighthearted moments during a date - the character's tic is based on Josef's own, personified by  referring to it as "Dave Tickingtons".

Josef wants to be inclusive with this project, the subject is personal but he would love the contribution of fellow young people with Tourettes, because he knows that the condition is so wonderfully unique to every individual. He would love to have a casual conversation with young adults about their own experiences with Tourettes, and to find some light hearted and relatable stories to incorporate into the film/characters. In particular, if you have ever had a bad date because of your Tourettes, he would like to know!

It's fantastic that all industries are slowly becoming more inclusive when it comes to 'diversity', and the film industry is definitely shedding light on it more than ever. Josef is completely supportive of giving opportunities to the Tourettes community within this project - you're all the experts!

No matter what your skills may be, if you have a passion and interest in filmmaking please do get in touch with Josef, he'd love to find some way to have you help on the film.
