New research sheds light on the genetics of Tourette syndrome and OCD

A Rutgers-led international study has identified 36 genes linked to an increased risk of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and chronic tic disorders, including Tourette syndrome.

The findings provide important new insights into the biological processes involved in these conditions and help explain why OCD and tic disorders often occur together.

Researchers analysed DNA from nearly 4,000 people and found that many of the identified genes are involved in how brain cells communicate, particularly in areas of the brain linked to movement, habits and decision-making.

While these findings will not lead to immediate changes in treatment, they represent a significant step forward in understanding the underlying biology of Tourette syndrome. The researchers hope this knowledge will support the development of more targeted treatments in the future.
