Recent research found that 77% of young people attending a tic clinic at a hospital in London reported worsening of tics at night. This is likely to affect sleep, and in line with this, patients also reported other sleep-related problems, including difficulties with sleep onset and waking during the night. Sleep related problems are correlated with tic severity, suggesting that worse tics=worse sleep.
Our research is looking at the relationships between sleep, learning and emotions in a group of children with Tourette Syndrome (TS) or Chronic Tic Disorders (CTD), compared to children without these diagnoses. The project involves wearing a wristwatch for 2 weeks, doing some activities with a researcher and on an iPad and filling out some questionnaires. You will receive £10 Amazon vouchers for participation.
Our hope is that knowing more about these links will help us to detect and manage sleep and learning difficulties for young people with TS/CTD more effectively in the future.
