Join us for an exploration of the neuroscience of Tourette syndrome, examining what current research tells us about its underlying causes and the brain mechanisms involved. This session will explore leading scientific theories of how and why tics occur, alongside emerging research offering new perspectives on the development of Tourette’s. We will also consider how our understanding of the neuroscience relates to current and emerging approaches to treatment and management.

About our Guest Speaker

Dr Edward Palmer

Edward is a psychiatrist, researcher and Clinical Lecturer in Psychiatry at the University of Birmingham. His clinical interests include youth mental health, schizophrenia, functional neurological disorder and Tourette syndrome (TS), while his research focuses on developing and evaluating novel treatments for psychosis.

Edward also has lived experience of Tourette’s, having had symptoms since early childhood. He has been a trustee since 2017 and now serves as Vice Chair, as well as sitting on the safeguarding and research subcommittees. One of his favourite aspects of the role is delivering training to healthcare professionals and parents, helping to improve understanding of Tourette’s and the support available to those affected.

The session will run for one hour and will include time at the end for audience questions.
