Songwriting was always my ambition

From hearing great pop songs as a young child I started to write songs age 12. Growing up with undiagnosed Tourette syndrome was difficult for me. I knew there was something very deep down wrong, taking over me, making me violently tic but was fearful of seeing a doctor as I thought I would be locked up but never get better. So I work hard to mask my tics.

The thing about songwriting is, it is completely independent of T.S. Sometimes my tics interfere with my guitar playing, though music does have a wonderfully soothing effect and playing an instrument is like meditation. With songwriting, you can pause at any time and then return.

Each song is its own little world where the listener can visit and be enriched. writing a song is like a wonderful journey, you don't know what feelings it will stir or where it will go. It is freedom.

In times of my life when T.S left me housebound, songwriting gave me accomplishment, purpose and fulfilment. In better times it has given me a wonderful network of local musician friends, got me playing in bands and now playing and singing solo. A song I recently shared on a Facebook group now has one thousand views.

The communication of feelings is therapy for writer and listener, this is my aim. To inspire others, as I was inspired as a young child.

Ben Ramsey.
