Information for parents

We understand the many adjustments and emotions that parents of children with TS can experience. This section provides information and advice on different aspects of parenting, family life, and working with School.

Family life

When a child is diagnosed with TS, family life is inevitably affected.  Everybody has to adjust to the fluctuating nature of symptoms and the impact that it can have on everyone's emotions, reactions and relationships with eachother. Living with TS is a huge learning curve; there is no 'correct' approach to how a family should function, but if home life is feeling strained there are some things to consider which may help shift tensions and create more ease.  Factsheet coming soon.                                      

Managing behaviour

All children can find it difficult to manage their emotions - this is a normal part of their development - especially during the pre-school and teenage years.  A child who has TS and associated conditions will often show more oppositional behaviour than a typically developing child, and will therefore need more help in terms of learning acceptable and appropriate behaviour.  We have put together a factsheet with the help of Dr Uttom Chowdhury, Consultant in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, that looks at potential behavioural problems and management strategies for parents.



Another challenge parents can face is uncertainty over whether their child's behaviour is simply defiant or due to their Tourette Syndrome, which can lead to doubtfulness around discipline (establishing what is acceptable behaviour).  We look further into the subtleties of parenting a child with TS in the following section. School life

There are phases to school life that can be challenging for any child; becoming more responsible and independent, adapting to increasing workloads, not to mention feeling socially accepted by peers.  Although TS does not affect a child's IQ, difficulties associated with the condition can cause barriers to learning and impact on self confidence, making the everyday challenges even more difficult to deal with.  Our section on schools provides information, resources and advice for teachers and parents, to help both parties work together at enabling the child with TS to thrive in an adaptive and inclusive environment.
